This world and next

The old monk was dying. He lived a long life of 94 years. For most part of his life he had not known much apart from the premises of the monastery.

He was remembering his childhood days of carefree play. When he could wake up and not have to worry about anything but only to run out of the house and meet his cousins and friends. What great days.

‘Oh I have stopped breathing’ he realised.

The old monk was already dead but his brain had some activity left.

‘So this life is over! Let us see what is to happen next’ He was satisfied.

He was born into a rich family. He was an only child.

When he was 17 years old, he had to go to the passing out ceremony. Jack was excited to know how he had done in the exam. Where were the mistakes committed and where all he had shown character. He planned to use the practical skills learnt, to better his life and benefit the society in general. This was his time to learn from mistakes and not commit them again.

He went to the large glass building and showed his ID card. An autonomous vehicle arrived and its gates opened up in front of him. Jack sat down inside it. He was nervous.

As the vehicle started escalating he could see the view around him. There were other vehicles flying into the building.

He and five other vehicles stopped in front of a reception. The tall orange lady extended her elegant tentacles and gave everyone their ID cards. He remembered his 16 sisters mentioning this lady and laughing about her looks.

He sheepishly accepted the documents, consumed the liquid provided to him and sat down in the pool.

After 10 minutes, A friendly man approached him and asked if he was Jack. Jack confirmed.

‘Please come with me’. Jack followed.

He was asked to lie down on a table. A couple of wires were attached to his tentacles and his head.

‘Are you comfortable’ the friendly man asked. Jack Nodded.

‘Then I shall take my leave’ he smiled and left.

The room was very dimly lit.

There was a liquid being secreted from the holed over him. As his skin started absorbing it, he started feeling sleepy.

‘We will now show you the result of your exam,'' a voice said with no one in sight.

‘You will be able to rewind it at will and skip past parts that you want.’

‘You can pause at any point and analyse the situation and your response to it.’

After that there was a pause of a few seconds.

In a flash the information about the monks life was loaded into his mind.

The time was rxct RC. The place was planet refuru. The ocropug civilization had developed a system to influence the personalities of their citizens. Instead of risking development of negative traits in situations of stress they first tested simulated personality algorithms in a virtual reality called earth. One the personality algorithms had spent their allocated duration, they were evaluated for faults and character. Based on a minimal positive score, they were selected to be implanted into a newborn baby. The parents had a choice of which seed personally to implant into their children. This was only a seed influence and the children could still use free will. At seventeen they were exposed to the test that the personality algorithm had gone through and gain from the virtual experience.
